What is the Governing Board?

  • The Governing Board of the McLean Community Center (MCC) is an elected body of volunteers: nine adults and two high school students, which sets policies and provides oversight for MCC’s programs and facilities. MCC is a Fairfax County Special District Agency, which is funded by residents of Small District 1A, Dranesville, through a real estate tax surcharge that is currently 2.3 cents per $100 of assessed values (the MCC Tax District).

Why I’m Running

I am Cabot Fisher, and I am running for the Mclean Community Center Board. I am running because teens need representation on the board, and I am confident that I can be a strong voice for the community. I will work with the MCC to improve its relationship with the community and to make sure that it serves the needs of teens. I am involved with different groups such as my school's debate team, handbell choir, and the Jewish student alliance, which will make me a valuable voice on the board.

As a member of the board, I will improve the usage of space in the center to create more opportunities for educational help and classes such as gymnastics. I will also advocate for a tutor space for students so they can get help with their academics. My education and background in the community will give me the necessary tools to represent teens and all members of the community on the board.

My Priorities

  • The youth representative to our Community Center Board provides a unique and critical perspective for the Board. I’ll leverage that perspective to advance polices that:

    • Advocate for expanded continuing education opportunities for community members, such as language classes, and other self improvement courses.

    • Push for the adoption of tutoring and other after-school support programs for youth.

    • Prioritize community enrichment and cultural heritage programming.

  • Setting the Community Center budget is one of the most critical duties of our Board. I will positivity contribute to the Board’s budget deliberations by:

    • Advocating for expanded funding for popular programming with long wait lists.

    • Prioritizing funding for a dedicated academic support position at the center, responsible for tutoring and other youth academic support services.

  • Our Board shouldn't wait until a problem becomes unmanageable to address it. As a Board member, I will proactively seek out shortcomings with our center, and generate solutions on challenges such as:

    • Activating vacant and un-activated space at the center in creative ways so that we maximize the potential of the community center.

    • Ensure that we are maintaining the high standards of our center, both in terms of our facilities and programming.
